My Ireland Tour Environmental and Sustainability Policy Last updated: 8th November 2024

Principle #1 — Sharing information, without Greenwashing

This is core to the way we approach our environmental and sustainability responsibilities. We are here to share what we do, and what we need to do better, in a factual manner, without bigging up our efforts or talking down the negative impacts. Some things we have done well, some things we have not, and we are here to share so you can see where we are on the journey.

If you or your company are exploring similar paths to a more eco-friendly future, we've included a detailed breakdown of both our solar panel installation and smart plug system towards the end of this page.

Principle #2 — Getting our own house in order

Our first focus has been reducing all the impacts that are directly in our control.

What we have done
What we need to do

Our Solar Powered Office

The team at PureVolt Solar talked us through every step of our solar journey, from details on solar grants for businesses to info on solar PV inspection and maintenance, and everything in between, we even picked up a few of the more techy solar phrases along the way. Here's an overview of our solar panel setup:

Solar Panel Brand & Specs

On the 3rd of November 2023, PureVolt installed 6x solar panels across two roofs (you can find the full details of the panels here: LONGi LR5-54HPB-415M), two panels facing east and four panels facing south. Alas, this was the largest system we could fit, as our office's roof space is limited. The six panels each have 415 Wp, with a total solar array of 2.49 kWp.

Micro-Inverters

Our solar PV system also includes micro-inverters, eliminating the need for additional equipment inside the office — aside for two small boxes tucked neatly away in the top corner. These inverters optimize the energy from each panel independently, maximizing their efficiency. This setup is especially useful if, for example, one panel becomes shaded, as it won't impact the performance of the other five.

Energy Use

Since our office operates during the day, battery storage wasn't necessary. Instead, our solar setup powers the office directly, reducing reliance on the grid while we're at work.

Quick and Non-Disruptive Installation

The entire solar installation was completed in one day, with little to no interruption to our staff. Thanks to the setup's design, the work took place outside — allowing our team, and theirs, to carry on without disruption. An added bonus was their super-neat craftsmanship, and their seamless tidy up efforts afterwards.

Tapo P100 Smart Plug & Monitor

While we're sure there's numerous other options, the Tapo P100 works for our office needs.

Smart Plug Features

The Tapo P100 allows us to remotely control devices from anywhere via the TP-Link Tapo App (available on Android and Apple devices). This smart plug not only allows on/off scheduling, cutting out the risk of parasitic power drain on items such as Wi-Fi routers, but also provides real-time energy monitoring.

App Monitoring

The Tapo app is a handy tool for monitoring the energy of each plugged-in device. (The image below displays the app monitoring the energy usage of one of our devices using a smart-plug during September 2024. While this is just a small sample overall, it gives a good view of the app's design. Each bar represents a weekday, with gaps between sections indicating zero energy use when we're closed during weekends, go us and cutting out parasitic power!).

Quick and Easy Setup

Installation of the Tapo P100 was simple and took just a few minutes. The plug connects easily to the office Wi-Fi, and the app has a straight forward setup process. Once installed, we were up and running, with full control over our devices and energy usage in no time.
